East Georgia Produce

May 16, 2016 | Farmer Support, Meet My Farmer Monday

East Georgia Produce, established six years in Bartow, Georgia, is the recipient of Matt DeMatteo’s tender loving care. As a child, Matt grew up around farming and later worked for ten years on a government farm in Turks and Caicos. Today, Matt and his parents oversee 20-some acres of cultivated land, a feat that requires his full-focus attention. The River.

The farm is CNG certified, providing veggies, microgreens, melons, flowers, herbs, and pork at the market. East Georgia Produce also runs a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program through local stores. Over the last four years, the farm has offered semester-long internships for students wanting to know more about agriculture. For Matt, simply seeing what grows from the small seeds put in the ground is reward enough.

Amy Sutter, Board President for ALG, describes how fortunate Augusta is to have Matt’s enriching talent. “We are so grateful to all of our farmers for their amazing hard work and talent for getting wholesome, sustainable, responsibly-grown produce from their soil to our homes. What stands out with Matt DeMatteo is his generosity of time and knowledge to teach people the importance of sustainably grown food. From farming families and neighbors to customers and businesses, Matt has shared his know-how with many people over the years. And it has made our community stronger for it.”

There it is! I couldn’t have said it better myself. Check out East Georgia Produce at the ALG On-Line Farmers Market, or visit them each Saturday at the Saturday Market On The River.
